Stage 6 will shut down on Feb 28th 2008 →
It seems Stage6 will be shut down on Feb 28th 2008. According to the blog post by a DivX employee, it is simply a matter of the site becoming too expensive to maintain. I’m deeply saddened by this: some channels alone have so many documentaries that they’ve become veritable historical archives.

Can you hear me now? Yes, yes I can. (GSM hacked... →
The 64-bit encryption method used by GSM networks (AT&T/TMobile/etc), known as A5/1 has been theoretically crackable for 10 years now, but it was very expensive to do so. At Black Hat D.C. 2008 however, a $1,000 solution was unveiled that claims to crack it in 30 minutes, or for $100,000 it can be cracked in 30 seconds.

How to Properly Use the Semicolon →
nostrich:Just as a footnote to my earlier post about the semi-colon, here’s a pretty good guide to using one. (And yes, the post seems to have a few other grammatical mistakes, including a split infinitive in the title, but dig deep, it’s got the facts right.)

The Psychology of Sarcasm →
They’re smart, they’re funny, and they know it. But is cracking jokes that put other people down truly wise? Sarcasm is their means of indirectly expressing aggression toward others and insecurity about themselves. Wrapping their thoughts in a joke shields them from the vulnerability that comes with directly putting one’s opinions out there.

Insignia photo frame virus much nastier than first... →
Ugh, we were already sick of digital photo frames — and now it looks those now-discontinued virus-ridden Insignia units from Best Buy and several other models produced in China were carrying a much nastier trojan that we’d originally heard.
